I've done the book as you go thing. I honestly wouldn't recommend it if you have children in tow.

Although we never actually had to sleep in the car, we came close, once or twice. As has been said, in high season, it can be nigh on impossible to get accommodation at the last minute in tourist areas.

BTW You can usually get free wifi outside Safeway supermarkets if you get stuck. The satnav is your friend.
