PC World offer any good?

Hi
Have been looking at this deal from PC world?

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2071054582.1156783653@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfladdijkgdhfgcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&sku=742712

Does anyone have any ideas if this is a good deal? Basically for a 13 year old for christmas wanting to do the usual things, downloading music, msn and maybe a bit of school work in his spare time!

  • Yup That will certainly do the job :)

If you can find anything a little cheaper then even better.. all he needs really is 2.4ghz min processor wise, and 512mb Ram with 120gb hard drive space min...

Those are all in that PC World deal so its good.. but just letting you knwo in case you want to look around first :)

I wouldn't buy PC christmas presents now, the same thing will probably be cheaper in December.. Computers are about the only things that go down in price as time goes on, and 4 months is a long time in the PC market.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

There are quite a few good deals on at PCW at the moment - check out product code 393209 - it's a Compaq, £30 more & it's only got an 80Gb HD but it's got a dual core processor (for true multitasking) and a separate 256Mb graphics card (all the cheaper Packard Bell ones have integrated graphics - no good for gaming, which is what all teenagers will start doing once they have a PC).

This is unlikely to suit a 13 year old boy. It can't play any decent ie exciting, computer games really and will be hugely disappointing for him if his mate turns up with a game they want to play.

It can be upgraded with a graphics card for games but uses the rapidly becoming obsolete AGP interface, so thats a dead end for the future.

Its a bit short of memory and will only just be adequate when the new windows ( Vista ) comes in in a few months time. ( He's bound to want it sooner or later ! )

The hard drive is a bit small for downloads, music and videos.

I'd spend another £100 or so and get something that will be a lots better and last a lot longer before becoming obsolete.

I have checked the box shifters sites and can only see basic office type computers in that range.

Try having a word with a local independent shop . You could get a great deal there and exactly what you need rather than what pcwurld or comet want to sell you.
