Remove gas meter box

I have a gas meter box at the front of my property, there is a small gap between the back of the box and the brick wall.
Unfortunately I left an envelope containing a card and voucher on top of the meter box as I was locking up and this envelope has fallen down the gap!!
I've tried poking around to push the card to a position I can fish it out from but it's not working. There are instructions on the inside door to install and remove the gas meter box, but is it safe for me to do this so I can get the card out?
It seems to be a case of unscrewing a few things and lifting the box off, but I was wondering whether the gas should be turned off first, or whether I should be careful to avoid any part of the meter itself when moving the box.
Do I need to contact my gas supplier?
Thanks in advance for any replies!

Pretty much as lemontart said, the meter box is yours though so you can remove it yourself if you wantWorking within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0

What you dont say is, is it possible to remove the case without the meter i.e. are there slots behind the pipes to the wall which means you can pull the box forward without having to disconnect any pipes? If the answer is yes you can, go ahead, if the answer is no dont touch it.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Have you tried all ways of getting the envelope out, eg suck out with a vacuum cleaner, or if there are gaps all round, try blowing out with a hairdryer. Might just move it enough to reach.0
