I have a small trough which is about 4-5" deep, can I plant salad leaves in it or is it too shallow?

    That will be fine.

Are there holes for drainage? The compost shouldn't dry out, but mustn't be wet either. When (and if)the sun is strong, salad leaves benefit from a little shade. I've often used bits of fleece, net curtain etc. It could just be put in a shady place too.

I have been growing salad leaves in just a seed tray and they have been doing well, just remember to keep them watered and enjoy
  • Hope they are as successful for you as they have been me, have harvested loads of tasty leaves from mine.

you can also grow strawberry plants in shallow pots as their roots don't go down that deep.

Yes, I was quite surprised, I had some left over plants I put in small pots and they are doing REALLY well - hoping for lots and lots of runners - can never have too many strawberry plants in IMHO :)

I started growing these this year. Got some free seeds from BBC and bought some at Morrisons. I have them in raised beds 2 rows plus several post at various stages, plus over variegated salad plants that have yellow flowers on and lettuce. We have them every day always sow more every other weeks hopefully have them until Autumn
  • Don't you have greenfly on your salad? Having to wash leaves one by one to get rid of them is a tedious job. Don't think I'll grow salad again :(

Preparing home grown stuff is always more lengthy than buying vegetables from the supermarket.
If you are not prepared to spend the time doing it, then GYO is probably not for you. Go back to the chlorine washed, pesticide drenched, supermarket lettuce.
