I think you'll find will all printers where the print head is separate to the cartridge (e.g. Canon, Epson) a new print head will cost more than the printer.

As with the others - Lexmark inkjet's- cheap, but poor print quality and expensive to run. In addition, any cheap cartridges available will be refills, whether they are marked as refills or not. Lexmark won't licence production of the print head to anyone else.

Strangely, Lexmark's laser printers are actually quite good.

    Me too. :o

Next time I will buy a laser printer I think.

I've just brought the same one from Morrisons. It's a good piece of kit but the cartridges are expensive. This seller on ebay sells both for £22.98 including postage. (compatibles) Haven't brought from him yet, but the feedback looks good.

    Sorry :grouphug:

When you see the cost of the cartridges it's usually the case that it's cheaper to buy a new printer, so see it as buying a new printer each time and you won't feel so bad about buying a more economical one then. In the mean time you have a printer :)

A VERY sweeping statement which I would disagree with! Not all Lexmarks give poor print quality, some might say that by replacing the print heads on the cartridges every time you change the ink, that they offer better quality!!

It may not be as bad as you think.

There are two main considerations when buying a new printer:
    1) Do you need a high resolution printer or will an all-in-one printer do?
    2) How often do you print?

    Companies make money either:
    a) From the printer
    b) From the printer cartridges
    c) Somewhere in between.
Epson tend to fall into a).
HP and Lex tend to fall into b).
The Dell £10 printers for example fall into b). The printer is heavily subsidised and the cartridges are expensive. Their less-subsidised all-in-one printers give better value on the cartridges.

Printers and their cartridges are usually developed with one of the following stategies:
    i) The printer head is on the printer. This allows for a high investment in the printer head giving a very high resolution. The printer cartridges are simply tubs for holding ink. Good for those that print fairly often.
ii) The printer head is on the printer cartridge. The advantage with this technique is that if someone does not use their printer often, if the print head clogs up, you get a new print head with your next cartridge. Whilst this causes problems with refilling a cartridge, it means that you don't have users spending a fortune on a new printer just to have the printer clog and have to pay for an expensive head replacement or a new printer.
iii) Somewhere in between. The print head is seperate to both the printer and the print cartridge giving the best of both worlds.
Epson tend to fall into i).
HP tend to fall into ii).
Canon recently tend to fall into iii).

In summary, if you tend to print very infrequently, buying a cheap printer with expensive cartridges is the best way forward. If you tend to print a lot, investing in a more expensive printer that is less subsidised with the printer head on the printer (or at least not on the cartridges) is the best way forward. ;)

Two Lexmark printers, both have had paper feed and cartridge problems... nuff said. I'm going Epson or Canon after I've used up the ink refils - anyone recommend a good, low-priced model?

HOWEVER, I disagree about Canon printers, I had one and it broke, new print head was more than the printer!

I suppose its like anything. Some people have good experiences and others don't. Sorry to hear you didn't have much luck, however my trusty old canon never lets me down.

It's like online reviews about any product. You should always read them and take what they say with a pinch of salt as everyone's opinions and experiences vary.

My parents have an the same model of Epson that you have and they also use poundland ink cartridges without any trouble.

I have a Lexmark printer. Works very well, but as said above, the cartridges cost a fortune. There is one of those refill shops near me and they can refill them for £9.99, however this works for 4 or 5 times then I'll need to buy one of the genuine cartridges which are £20-25. My next printer WON'T be a Lexmark, that I can say for sure.

As for the all in ones, I have misgivings. If something goes wrong and it needs to be repaired, you are without printer, scanner and copier. I much prefer to have a printer and scanner separate.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
