Well, Im sure the comment wasnt directed at you, but at the food - Iams has a rather bad reputation.

I just wanted to say that I can understand how you may have felt about that comment. I've grown up with dogs but it wasn't until I actually started being the "owner" of a dog myself that I started to learn just what a minefield it is out there with issues such as food, vets etc.
When you're a new owner it is only natural that you want what is best for your dogs and will likely rely on the more visible name-brand products to provide your dogs what you are looking for. Unfortunately, some of the name-brand stuff is of poor quality but you're not to know that as the fact is that the name-brand stuff is only name-brand because a lot of people are using it.
My two are very fussy when it comes to dog food and on the odd occasion when I have been unable to get them their normal food they have usually flat out refused to eat the substitute that I got - one of which is a very well known make of food - which I believe is due to the fact that they can tell it is different and as they are creatures of routine to some extent this makes sense.
I'm not in the habit of advertising as such but I've been using Royal Canin Medium for my dogs since they were puppies as this is what the breeder recommended and had originally been feeding them. I take my dogs for a checkup every 6-8 months and they've always been passed as perfectly healthy so I can at least say that for my two this brand of food seems to be perfect for their needs.0 -

But if you're not told it's awful food, how will you know?
The comment was that iams was a god awful food, not that you're a bad owner. The fact that you're even worried about what your dog is eating, and how much proves that you are the exact opposite of that.
When I first got my pup a year or so ago I fed him Iams, much to my horror now, but without the people here and at petforums I'd still be feeding iams. Don't let a comment about food put you off learning.
I'm not a fan of JWB, not since it was taken over by the makers of bakers, pedigree etc, plus I've heard of a lot of dogs having problems on it since then. But it is better than iams and you'll probably have less problems with a fish based food.
If you're ordering online though, for the price of JWB you can get much better. Have a look at fish4dogs and Arden Grange. Also I've heard nothing but great stuff about burns mini bites, cheaper than JWB and supposedly excellent for keeping dogs nice and calm.
I usually order my dry food from vetuk, I always look around and it's usually the cheapest. I'm in much the same position as yourself, disabled mother and no transport so I can't drag her everywhere, unless there's someone to care for her whilst I go out I have to order online.Sigless0
