Virgin Active Membership cost?

Hey forum,

Sorry was not sure where to post this, "budgeting" seemed an okay place, please let me know if I should move it.

I want to join my local Virgin Active (Virgin Active Islington). I tried out the facilities and really liked them, and it is on my way home so the idea of a swim after work is really appealing.:j

However I am scard of how much the cost will be.. please can someone advise me on how much it is likely to cost me? I know gym memberships are dependent on how it goes with the sales staff so I want to know how much it should cost before I have a meeting with them!

Much appreciated,

pjbltd

I go to Virgin Active near Heathrow and it's £57 a month for students (which I am on) or £64 for standard full-access membership on a month-month payment.
  • I would say anything between £65 to £78 per month is normal for VA. I't one of the more expensive gyms unfortunately that's why I'm not joining my local gym.
  • Yes, I guess Heathrow would be cheaper than Islington. I asked to join a local VA and was quoted £68 which I thought is to much for a gym.

Thanks for the replies guys. From searching on google I've realised I should also check if I can get a referral through work or from my Bupa Health Insurance (though from their site it doesn't look like you can get discounts from Virgin gyms). Will let you know the turn out..

VA in London cost between 40 to 70 a month depending on where it is. Very expensive compared to the local YMCA or leisure centre gym.

I would suggest that you look at the cancellation clause if you do decide to join. The consumer issues board is full of people who don't realise that in signing a 12 monthly payment agreement they are signing a credit agreement and 6 months in wonder why debt collectors are calling when they decide that the gym isn't for them and decide just to cancel the direct debits.

And you don't really know what it is like until you have been there a couple of months. The VA near me is a dump! Always full and quite messy with dirty changing rooms and broken lockers, no wonder they want to show people round off peak and not at 6pm!
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!
