Ideas for my garden- pics included

Hi Everyone

My garden is a bit of a blank canvas at the moment, i was brave yesterday and dug in a curvy border, which i plant to edge with log roll and grow shrubs in it.

Anyone any ideas how to landscape the rest of my garden? im pretty open to change so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The left hand side has 2 dwaef trees in and one bushy tree, but i have plenty of area there for growth once iv dug it over (weed killer is down atm killin the area of)

What about somewhere a climbing sweet pea obelisk? B and M have the obelisk's in for £3.99 and sweet peas are pretty cheap but they climb really well and they look lovely. You could have it in part of the border?

    Your garden looks lovely :)

  • Is that hedge all in your garden?
If you got rid of that you would have so much more space.

Glad you're keeping the hedge, so much better for wildlife and a natural air purifier.

Another one glad you're keeping the hedge! Is it privet? You can hack it back to the main trunks and it will re-grow well, giving you a few extra feet of width. I like growing things through hedges and have some honeysuckles, clematis and climbing roses through mine.

Your new border looks great -if you fancy climbers against the fence, Thompson & Morgan are doing 3 evergreen clematis for £9:

I'm assuming from the slide etc that you have small children - what about some raised beds for them to plant things in?

I would find the hedge rather "heavy" in such a small garden so I agree with stumpycat, cut the hedge back a bit to give you more space and grow something through it for interest and to break it up a bit.

What about tucking the bins behind the garage and using a piece of trellis or bambo fence to screen them.

I would also consider dividing the garden to give the illusion of more width. Maybe half width trellis at the end of the path. You could make the bottom part a play area although you need to consider whether you want to hide the slide or whether you prefer to keep an eye on your son from the house. You might get the same effect by introducing a flower bed - you'd get the feeling of division but would still be able to see through.

Personally, I would get rid of the straight solid path and have something less rigid but if it's concrete that's probably easier said than done.

Try advertising on freecycle for some cuttings - you never know what you might turn up for nothing.

    Good Luck.

I agree about the solid straight path, doesn't seem to lead anywhere particularly. Nothing particularly offensive about it, though, so no rush to remove it if you decide to as it will be hard work to remove, concrete with hardcore underneath.

If it were mine I would lay stepping stones instead, probably more centrally, that lead right to the play area.

Have to say that your garden is looking good, one that I would be happy to live next door to. :)

I love gardens like this. I'd put up some trellis to hide the bins behind then grow something pretty and wildlife friendly up the trellis, for example honeysuckle. I'd include a small veg plot, maybe a raised bed,and grow lettuce and herbs, the children could be involved too, with their own patch of easy to grow things. Then you could expand the theme with a small wild life area, native wild flowers like primrose, cowslip, bluebells, all under a fruit tree such as apple or plum, then let a circle of long grass develop round it,mow in mid july, and you have your own mini-meadow. Dragon flies and lacewings love this sort of thing.
