removing avg

I am trying to remove avg from my computer to install Avast and this is the message i'm getting=
Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: @AvgErrorCode_0x0253 %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8"
@AvgErrorCode_0x0020
Any help would be apprieciated. Not to good with all this techie stuff.:o
I use the computer mainly for the internet, don't download a lot and do a lot of photographs so would it be worth buing the other version?

    avast free is fine, but backup those photos

    Use this [ pick the one for your Operating system ] to uninstall

    And no don't buy anything, use Microsoft Security Essentials to protect you, it's probably the best price / performance point in Anti Virus terms.

    Thanks so much for your help Richie and closed.That was brilliant. Have uninstalled Avg no trouble,and installed Avast. Will have a look at the microsoft one, Richie.

    Your welcome, glad your sorted. :)

    REM if you go for MSE make sure you uninstall Avast first, never run two [ LIVE ] checkers at the same time, they fight like two kids with only one remote!

    I only recently heard about Avast - I currently use AVG free. Is there much difference? I've always been happy with AVG and am reluctant to mess around if there's no benefit. And is Avast totally free too, or do you have to pay after eg first 3 months?
