  • Sorry man, it's always best to check the basic things first, especially when Dell are involved.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

  • I'd recommend E6300 or an E6400 (could get either to run at the same clock speed as your P4 with a little push in the BIOS)
Looking for a new motherboard in the months to come would be a sound investment, as newer motherboards support the Core 2 Duo range, SATA II

If you get a new one, be careful with the thermal paste!

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a 2.8 Intel Celeron and 768mb of ram. In comparison with another pc we have with same processor, same amount of ram its quiet alot faster than the Dell. So much so that I will be scrapping the pc at the end of the year keeping the processor and ram and a few others bit for anew mobo . I think Dells are reasonable priced thsi one was a good offer at time £183 with 15" tft but they certianly have a short life and not very upgradable.

I would get a new mobo and get a Intel dual core 2 duo, in fact my next pc will have that in the next few weeks
