Short term UK insurance on foreign car

Options
Dear all,

Let me try to explain my problem.

I have a foreign (italian) car, just decided not to renovate the italian insurance and to switch the cal to the UK system. I have done the MOT, and then used confused.com to get an insurance quote, but the cheap quotes that I received require that the registration is used to insure the car (no option to use the chassis number). But I still do not have a UK registration number, and in order to get one I need to have a valid UK insurance!

So I thought that one solution might be to get an insurance that, even though relatively expensive, could be done on the chassis and with low (or no!) cancellation fee so that I could switch to a more competitive insurance after I have registered my car.

Do you have better suggestions? And what insurance would you recommend?

Thanks for reading this and for your help!

Vittorio

There are two car dealers who specialize in lefthand drive cars and offer insurance quotes for them.I imagine they can help with insuring foreign registered cars. They are :-

    lhdplace.co.uk transeuropean.co.uk

Both are well established businesses and I hope they can point you in the right direction.

    Best of luck

thanks for your suggestion. I have tried the two companies that you suggest, but their quotes are not competitive. I am now convinced that my best option is to find a company that can insure my car for 2 weeks only, anybody out there with suggestions on what insurances offer this?

    THanks,

Hi Vittorio - after asking around some more names came up as follows and these firms should be able to insure a foreign registered car on its VIN identification number :

    Footman James in Birmingham 0121 561 4196
Stuart Collins in Swansea 01792 655562
    Mills & Wood in Chippenham 01249 653531

Then you will need to get UK plates issued. It will keep the price down if you can get a letter preferably in English from your Italian insurance company saying how many years you have driven in Italy without claims or accidents.

Best of luck and let me know if I can help any more

  • Alesdair, thanks very much for your suggestions and for taking the time! Stuart Collins was most helpful, and I may go with them

    Again, thanks very much,
