Someone said the Registrar tells the Council when someone dies - not so !
The registrars have to for any person over 18 under the council tax (administrationm and enforcement) regs 1992 - I see the reports every week so I know they send them....
    Information as to deaths
5.—(1) Within 7 days of the registration of the death of any person aged 18 or over, the registrar of births and deaths for the sub-district in which the death occurred shall, in accordance with paragraph (2), supply to any billing authority whose area includes all or part of, or falls within, that sub-district, the following particulars of the death—
    • (a) the name and surname of the deceased,
    • (b) the date of his death, and
    • (c) his usual address.

There is NO requirement to tell your local Authority anything other that who IS living in a property. If someone dies or moves out, you tell them that the house is now empty or you are now on your own.

If it affects any discounts/exemptions you are and also if in receipt of CTB/HB you are also required to update any changes.

This must vary from district to district, I just informed the council my mother had died and bungalow was empty, that was it, council tax canceled for 6 months
How each council processes the information is based on their own procedures. As long as the end result falls within the legisaltion they can pretty much get their however they wish.

They would presumably already have had her as a single occupier and probably already received notification from the registrar which corroborated what you told them.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I suggest you contact CAB or similar organisation for a benefit check, to make sure you are getting what is due to you.
