Laptop cutting out, Battery?

Recently my laptop has started to turn itself off after its initial boot up.
Initially I thought my battery was just low so I charged it overnight and tried again. The laptop booted up fine and then as I opened a program turned off again. When I have the laptop plugged in at the mains there is no problem booting up and the laptop works fine.
The laptop was not overheated at any point so I am confident that's not the problem.
Laptop is approx 14 months old HP 550 running Visa 32bit home ed.
It sounds obvious that there is a problem with the battery but I wanted to run it past the experts on here. Is there anything I can do to check the battery? Is it normal for a 14 month laptop nbattery to be broken?

Battery. Its about the right age. If its running OK on mains then the only real likely possibility is the battery. You can get them for around £30-£40 online so its worth a try.0
