London via train for £5 !!

Speech-Mark-Left.gif

Official Insert:

Buy the Chiltern Railways E-Day ticket 7 days in advance of your journey and it's just £5 one way from Birmingham Moor Street or Snow Hill to London Marylebone. Even if you're not local to Birmingham do the ten minute walk from Birmingham New Street to Moor Hill and you could be quids in. E-Day tickets are just available on the Chiltern Railways website and you can't get a refund if you change your mind. If you don't want to tie yourself down alternatively there's a £15 return ticket (less if you have a railcard).

Hi everybody,

After hours of trying to work out the cheapest way for me to travel to london..i stumbled upon Chiltern railways site https://www.chilternrailways.co.uk

As Birmingham is the businest station in the country, most train journeys travel through it so almost everyone going to london from the north could save some cash.

If your time of travel is flexble you can get a ticket to london from Brum for £5 single, and then £5 back again! bargain! You print the tickets off at home. However theres not much choice of times but if your flexible its well worth it..

Only slightly higher is the £15 return ticket which has more choice of times, and also you can actually buy this on the day (the Just 15 ticket)

Check the website to see if the times you want are available.

BY THE WAY Im actually travelling from Liverpool, but breaking down the journey has enabled me to save about £30 using the £15 return to london!! So wherever your traveling from it could save you some cash!

hope this helps somebody save some cash

Although it should be pointed out that Chiltern Railways go from Birmingham Snow Hill, and Virgin go from Birmingham New Street.

You can simply walk from Birmingham New Street to Birmingham Moor St, which is the first stop on the Chiltern Railways service (signposted & takes approx 10mins) A very reliable service, not too busy - comes recommended!

I much prefer Chiltern Trains - comfier and cleaner than Virgin. The downside with Moor St to Marylebone (when I last did this a few years back) was the journey time: it added about 40 mins compared to Virgin trains leaving from New Street.

Not sure what the current time difference is, so may be worth checking before you book.

The price is excellent. But I prefer Virgin Trains. I think they're cleaner than Chiltern. Chiltern trains take about 2.5 hours. Virgin 1.5 hours. If you don't mind the extra hour (or so), then Chiltern is a definate thumbs up! :money:
  • Yup north east train travel is still well over priced.. infact any public transport is over priced in the north east.. sorry for the moan
  • Just to let you know, Chiltern have a ticket called "Just 15 return" which gives you a return ticket for just £15 which can be used to return within 5 days.
Time restrictions: after 11:05 from Birmingham
11:05-15:00 and after 19:05 from london, 7 days a week which means there are only 2 trains you can get on a sunday evening.

I use this ticket all the time for nice weekend breaks. Although it takes 2 hours, it still takes 2 hours on a sunday, which is the same as the "high speed" line from euston to new street on a sunday. With a rail card you can get this ticket for £9.90, and its available from the ticket office at the station, no need to book in advance.
