It's an African world cup, with the integral sounds of african football. I must say, I hate them as well. You could always try www.vuvuzela.fm/

    Ha ha.

It's a World Cup, HELD in Africa.

Not sure how integral the horn is to Spain v Switzerland or England v USA.

At least they'll drown out that band that plays the tune from the Great Escape over and over again.

I have done a fair bit in noise cancellation - mostly for aviation so aircrew can hear voice instructions better but principles are more or less the same - if the noise from the horns is removed what is left would sound fairly odd.

One solution the broadcasters could do is replace the stadium noise with synthetic crowd noises. This present further problems in that the commentators would probably have to be not at the stadium (to prevent noise entering the mics) so would be broadcasting off a monitor. Talksport did something similar a few years back to provide commentary for England matches they did not have the rights for.

Although the noise is not my cup of tea, I appreciate that this is how football is watched in Africa and we have no rights in dictating to these supporters otherwise. At the last cricket world cup in the Caribbean, the ICC put out hundred of regulations as to what crowds could/could not do/bring along - this killed the unique caribbean atmosphere and the locals stayed away.

The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

    Yes you are
  • Have they done something to make it less bad? It seems to me that the droning was less prominant in last nights Uruquay/South Africa match. Or maybe they are not as popular with the Africans as everyone thought! Or maybe the fans are beginning to get bored with them!

To be honest I only notice it for the first few minutes of the game, after that the only time it bothers me is when the commentator brings it to my attention again!

Watch it on the TV and listen to radio coverage. Much better coverage as they assume you cant see the game and have to give good commentary.

Simple solution, turn the box off, go out and do something as a family.
Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.

Spookily, the volume started to drop after Uruguay scored their first goal. Then, for some unknown reason, got quieter during the match (coincidentally whilst Uruguay were scoring more goals) and then seemed to fade away completely about 15 minutes before the end of the game when a lot of South African fans started to leave. Cant think that any of this is connected with South Africa losing this particular match. That would be far too petty.
