House alarm

hi after some advice im currently renting a house from a housing association lately this area seems to be a slight target for car theft ,attempted break ins . it is mostly brought houses around here plus a neighbourhood watch area which is good but is not so good is im the only person on my street without a house alarm or any outside lights ! i rang the housing assc this morn to ask them if they can install one for me as they had in my previous property few years ago but they said they dont do them any more and its up to me :( they did say there may be a police or goverment scheme to help with putting alarms in but wasnt sure ! bit similar to the fire birgade installing free smoke alarms he said . anyway i cant afford to buy or install an alarm im a single mum and feel a bit of a target for burgalars anyone know of a scheme like this or similar or any other ideas ?

You cant make them install alarm. There was a thing where you could get a discount off a certain percentage off security measure if neighbour has been broken into. Contact your local community supprt officer they'll be able to tell you more. Most house alarms are not very effective anyway as there mostly ignored, even the police will ignore them.
"Audible Only and Hybrid Alarms, including bells-only and automatic dialling alarms, as well as alarms from non-compliant companies and non-compliant central stations. URNs will not be issued for these systems. To obtain police attendance, in addition to their activation Type B alarms will also require some indication that an offence is in progress, e.g. from a witness."

It might just be worth getting a cheap fake one for the time being and saving up for a decent wireless one that will alert you when its set off.

Local police will usually offer a free crime prevention survey. Having good locks and boundary protection eg prickly plants can make a big difference.
