Applying for a Nationwide debit card??

Trying to fill out the application for my brother now as he's in need of a debit card & would rather stay with Nationwide.

Just got to the final page saying he qualifies for a cheque book & a "cash card+"

What's a "cash card+"?

I'm assuming this is different to a debit card?

If so, can he set up direct debits on a standard cash card?

I cancelled THAT application for the brother as i didn't know what a cash card+ was

After reading your post, i re-applied, but at the end, it never said what would be offered to him. It just said they'd get in touch. Wonder why the 2nd time round it never said what would be offered?

Just done the exact same application for my sister, who earns much less (10k vs 2k). Anyway, at the end, it said they could offer her a DEBIT CARD. Not a cash card+ but a debit card.

What's going on with their system?

The Cashcard+ is indeed a debit card, but it's a second class version of one. The confusion is due to Nationwide's terminology for their cards, -other banks and building societies can be equally confusing.

When they say "debit card", they mean the standard debit card that you get with a FlexAccount if you are deemed credit worthy and they grant you an overdraft. Withdrawals and transactions with this debit card will allow you to go over-drawn.

When they say "Cashcard+" they mean the new debit card that they are introducing to replace the current cash-point card for people with a FlexAccount without an overdraft, and also to some savings account customers. Withdrawals and transactions with this debit card will be refused if you haven't got enough money in your account. Also, this sort of debit card will not work in places where there is no online connection to the bank for them to check your balance. Typical places are on a train when you buy tickets from the conductor, or petrol pumps.

He wouldn't be setting up direct debits on the card at all, whichever it is.

He'd be setting them up on the bank account.

I was just wondering how you know the cashcard + will be offerred on some savings products and if you know what ones.

I dont think anyone has had sight of one yet to see if it is embossed or like the new santander visa debit, still has a new BIN but is still unembossed like an electron. Would be intrigued to know what the full position is with northern rock too, I think I will be getting on of their current accounts now they give a debit card to everyone on a speculative basis in that you could end up a Tesco or Virgin customer and it gets you a slight head start with them.

How do I know? Because Nationwide have said so.

Which savings accounts? According to Nationwide, all the ones which currently offer a cash card:

    http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/card-changes2.htm

"Are you going to replace all of my cards?

If you hold any savings accounts that have card facilities, these cards will be replaced between June and October 2010. "
