DVD Burning Problem

DVD-RWError.jpg

This is what I get when I insert a blank, new, unused DVD+R disc into my dvd writer. I'm freeing up space on my HDD and as such am burning 4.1GB onto a DVD before deleting the files off the Hard drive.

But does anyone know why windows won't allow me to burn a dvd? I get the above message when I try, and if I just insert the blank DVD it changes the name of the DVD drive to a CD drive

Am I supposed to use a program like Nero, because Dell didn't give me one, well not that I'm aware... :o

Cheers  :D

yeah unfortunately i dont think (from past experience like yourself) that windows own writer program supports dvds. You will have to use a program like nero or something, allthough dell should have given you a program to use. The most popular ones for new pcs are something like:

Roxio something (replace something with program name - roxio is the company)
Easy cd creator version - X
    Sonic something (replace as above)

Check around the start menu for those programs if not download a trial of nero here

remember to untick the yahoo toolbar thing unless you want it
Like what I said? click thanks!:rotfl: :rotfl:

Looks like the software you're trying to use doesn't recognise that you have a dvd burner. What software is it?

Secondly if you can get hold of Nero...grab it....its really versatile although version 7 is a bit buggy....also Dell in their wisdom shipped some PCs with DVD writers that didn't have the latest firmware which means although they advertised 16 speed....it only recognises some discs as 8 speed...figure that?

to get back to original question, your burning program should allow you to choose dvd or cd...if the dvd option is not there, you either have software that doesnt recognise your dvd burner OR you dont have a DVD burner....I would try different software....

    good luck

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

  • As others say, the CD writing wizard built in to Windows doesn't support DVDs.

    Try a free burner, e.g. http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

One thing, do not delete the files from your hard drive until you've checked that they are on the DVD and you can copy them back to the hard drive by copying them to another folder.

    Nero.jpg

I've installed Nero v5 from my old PC backup pack. It doesn't seem to support my drive :rotfl: so I'll download that free one in a bit.

When you've got Nero up and running, go over to afterdawn and you will find so much information on what to do next.

I've downloaded chippy's free program but under drive info it says I've got a SONY 16x capable but when I go to write disc it gives only 1x, 2x and 4x as options

I can override the automatic selection and select 16x but is this advisable?? It's worth mentioning that my laptop, when bought, stated on the invoice that it was 8x :o

I'm burning 4.1GB so obviously the faster, the better ;)

If you go onto the forums that are linked in my post above, you will see that just about everyone advises to burn at 4x. Too fast and you get audio synching problems so I do my burning overnight when we go to bed.

Saves on making too many coasters:D

I actually made a DVD Movie of Family Guy (obtained legitimately, of course ;)) but around 30 mins into the film the sound and vision sieze up :( That was done using "Sonic". Came with the laptop :rotfl: Maybe there's a better program I could use... or maybe I'll just reduce the speed to 4x. It did burn that one at 8x :o
