Problems making a 'Faster Payment' to MBNA

I'm at a stalemate with MBNA and Barclays and wonder if anyone can shed any light on the problem for me.

On Thursday morning I went into my Barclays Bank branch to make a 'faster payment' from my Barclays current account to my MBNA Amex card.

No problem the bank said and took the details from me. The MBNA account number 70328725 and their sort code 08-61-30, and then my 15-digit amex card number as the payment reference. All done

Checked my current account 24 hours later and noticed the payment had been made and then reversed by MBNA on the same day. Went into Barclays to find out why. They brought up the detailed transaction narrative for both the payment and the reversal. The reversal said - 'unknown reference number' and then quoted my Amex card number back, but missing the 15th digit. The payment narrative however, did give the full 15 digit number.

Phoned MBNA (whilst still in Barclays), went through all their crazy menus, spoke to someone who assured me (surprise surprise) that the problem was with Barclays and they MUST have made an error.
Went over to the personal banker who re-keyed in the transaction before my very eyes, double checked, showed me the screen, etc. Sent the payment again and all the details were definitely correct. Within two or three minutes the payment had been reversed again for exactly the same reason - wrong reference number. They quoted back the number, again missing the 15th digit.

MBNA are at a loss, Barclays are at a loss.

I have set up a direct debit anyway so am okay for future payments, but has anyone heard of anything like this before, or know why it might be happening?

sorry can not help with your particular problem but would bet its MBNA problem. I made a fast payment to my MBNA card last thursday and it went through my bank straight away but not my card so got the usual charge. It took the usual 4 days to go on to my card.
