Unless the parents checked it regularly, a silent/passive detector probably wouldn't have saved the poor children who died in Corfu recently in their sleep.
If carbon menoxide is leaking into your house you need something with an audible alert that will be loud enough to awake you, not something that just changes colour.
Agreed the ones that change colour shouldnt be used, get an electronic one

If you go to the Scottish Power website it links to this page, so I guess it's correct. I just had my boiler serviced and the guy from BG tried to sell me two if these at £36 each, so this is a bit of a bargain. :T0 -

the security warning i got was because their security certificate expired a few days ago... shouldnt be a cause for concern other for than an embarrased site admin somewhere

they had these in ALDI the other week (electronic kiddie brand ones) for 19.99 There were some left in the kendal branch last saturday, there may be some elsewhere if you are lucky.

I second redonred - my gas engineer told me by time those ones change colour it will be too late.
We had an electronic one in our old house as the boiler was in my sons room - must get one for here.Debt free May 2016 (without the support of MSE forum users that would never have been possible - thank you all)0 -
CO had obviously been present for at least a week in the villa so one of these may have shown a problem. That may not always be the case though, so I must agree with you that the electronic versions are better.
The colour changing cards may lull you into a false sense of security and would prove useless in cases where a sudden appearance of CO could prove fatal.0 -
yeah the recent stories of those poor kid son holiday made me realise that 22.50 is nothing compared to my kiddies safety. Plus i have to admit we had our boiler installed four years ago and have yet to have a service on it.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0

Premier wrote:I think you could be confusing this battery operated model Ei204 model with the mains operated 260 series. The 260 series do have a sensor that only lasts 5 years, but a replacement sensor is available from the manufacturers.
As L.S.D. says, there is nothing about the Ei204 model only lasting 5 years and the batteries are replaceable.

You are correct its the sensor that only lasts 5-6 years, its very rare to have a replaceable sensor but if you do of course the life is unlimited as long as you replace the sensors.0
