Carbon Monoxide Detector

Hi,
Went to a local village fayre 2 weeks ago where the fire brigade had a safety stand, they were offering FREE supply and fitting of Carbon Monoxide monitors(unsure if battery or electronic).
We signed up straight away as my husband and his sister nearly died of poisoning 5 yrs ago after staying at a B+B, sadly 2 young girls in the next room did die.
We are expecting to get a fitting in 2 weeks time.
So might be worth trying your local safety officer at the fire brigade.
HTH!How much ?????????!!!0 -
I picked one of these up for 3 quid the other week in tesco's anyway. Not that much of a deal0

One important point about these products, is that the electronic version appears to have the BS safety mark when you enlarge the photo, whilst the non-electronic one does not. I asked a fire safety officer for advice about purchasing a monoxide tester and all he would say was to ensure it had the BS mark. Because of this I purchased the electronic and more expensive version.0

--Tony-- wrote:Correct, they have a 5 year guarantee, first year with BG the other 5 with manufacturers, the sensor in a CO detector only lasts 5 years and thats why you can't replace the battery.
Once any CO detector is 5 years old you should throw it away and buy a new one.
The battery's inside are simply AA but and could be replaced but this really should not be done for safety reasons!
Hmmm, I've got an electrical one & the batteries are 'AA' & replaceable under a cover, similar to any battery cover. Nowhere does it say it only lasts 5 years.Nice to save.0 -
I think you could be confusing this battery operated model Ei204 model with the mains operated 260 series. The 260 series do have a sensor that only lasts 5 years, but a replacement sensor is available from the manufacturers.--Tony-- wrote:Correct, they have a 5 year guarantee, first year with BG the other 5 with manufacturers, the sensor in a CO detector only lasts 5 years and thats why you can't replace the battery.

As L.S.D. says, there is nothing about the Ei204 model only lasting 5 years and the batteries are replaceable.

Cancelled mine now as thought i had seen them for £3.00 something anyway but Woolworths are naughty id they are saying we are saving 80% as its misleading.0

I have a battery operated "kiddie" branded one that the nice guys at this morning gave me free. You can replace the batteries, but after it has been activated for the first time then you have 7 years before it sounds an alarm every 30 seconds to warn you that it needs replacing (it says it wont detect carbon monoxide in this state)

The sad events in the news these few days and the coverage on TV made me realised that i couldn't put it for later anymore so i've just ordered a Carbon monoxide alarm from Woolworths.. it seems the cheapest one after checking with few online shops and on ebay...I shall pick it up next week ... will be a peace of mind now that we're gonna use the heating a bit more! Just wanted to share and maybe remind few people that it could be useful...A friend is a present which you give yourself (R.Stevenson)

If the OP is for a detector that just changes colour then they're not really that recommended.
Unless the parents checked it regularly, a silent/passive detector probably wouldn't have saved the poor children who died in Corfu recently in their sleep.
If carbon menoxide is leaking into your house you need something with an audible alert that will be loud enough to awake you, not something that just changes colour.0 -
