Back-up Programs - What Do You Use?

I am looking for a freeware back-up program for use with my external hard-drive.

What Do You Use???

I want a program that has been tried and tested by others - a recommendation.
The kind of program that lets me see what documents I have backed up.

    NTBackup (start-programs-accessories-system tools-backup)
Tested by millions of users, totally free and been around for 10years.

Lets you backup up any file or folder (not in use) on your hard drive(s), as well as the system state.

If you use XP Home, NTBackup (or just 'backup') will not be installed automatically (Microsoft figured 'Home' users would not want to back up their data) but you can still get it. If you have an XP Home disk, you'll find it in the ValueAdd/MSFT/NTBackup folder - just run the install program from there. If you don't have the full version of XP Home, try doing a search of your restore disk (if you have one) for the NTBACKUP.msi file.

Yeah I use Syncback too. I wanted the extra functionality so spent the £8 and bought the full version. Great value for money considering the use I get out of it.

I use the XP Backup utility alternately with my own careful selection of files and folders collected together, dragged and dropped so that I could, in theory replace them where I want them, rather than Windows deciding. (They also then can easily be replaced onto the PC if there'd been a clean install with an entirely new Windows package after a BIG problem.) . Me paranoid?

I use Picasa (free from Google) to make an easy backup of all my pictures too... on CD-R/RWs, DVD-RWs and the ext HDD.

I prefer disk imaging programs (Norton Ghost/Acronis Trueimage) to simple backups, because they backup you data, and your windows config, and compress them all in one go. They aren't free, but only cost £15-30 which is a bargain if you compare with the consequences when your windows won't boot, or your hard disk fails, or you get a virus. (things that happen to people here on a regular basis).

The nearest freeware I've found is this:

There is a backup program on the cover CD of PC Pro this month, but I forget what it's called.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
