I know there is a definite change in the way Careers Advice works, but this is a work in progress.

The switch in emphasis is to move away from casual 'one off' enquiries about job opportunities to an extended relationship where someone can offer more tailored guidance to the client.

I think Nick should sign up for this when it becomes available, and blog about it.

You've swallowed that message so far down that it must hurt.

In my time, I've been in Tory office backrooms and heard what the gentry there really think, when they believe nobody's listening, about Average Joe - maybe someone like you. Believe me, they despise you and positively giggle at the thought that they're conning you into voting for them.

Of course, I may be wrong in thinking you're an average type - you may well be one of that 5% who think they're special and should not dirty their shoulders by coming into contact with the common herd.

Come to think of it.... 'dave'... oh yes....

carry on getting it wrong. i am neither a supporter of the tories or labour but you're far too dumb to realise that with your tongue so far up labour's very privileged rich backside
Martin has asked me to tell you I'm about to cut the cheese, pull my finger.

    ..

if someone is a regular contributor here doesn't it rather suggest they are communicating with ''the common herd'' quite comfortably enough?

Interesting to know that Labour MPs share more in common with Joe public than your average tory, old-boy-network, lobbyfodder, duck house merchant. Not many of them end up like this.

Mmmm he sounds just like your average coal miners son.
Palmer's father was a translator/editor and his mother was a language teacher. He is the cousin of Lieutenant-General Anthony Palmer, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff. He married Fiona Hunter in 2000, having proposed on the terrace of the House of Commons. The ceremony took place on his birthday in the ornate 14th century Chapel of St Mary Undercroft.[5][6]
He attended International Schools in Copenhagen and Vienna. He speaks six languages, despite being born with a cleft palate. He was the first person with this disability to enter Parliament.[1]
He was awarded an MSc at Copenhagen University and a PhD in Mathematics from Birkbeck College, University of London. He also studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he researched artificial intelligence and language translation.[1] As a computer scientist, he developed the COMPACT clinical trials package for the Medical Research Council. Joining the Swiss pharmaceutical firm Ciba-Geigy, he became head of Novartis Internet Service when Ciba-Geigy merged with Novartis.[1]
He designed and developed a computer game about the Battle of Britain, named Their Finest Hour.[7] He has written three books about conflict simulation games and still attends international conventions, winning the Diplomacy championship at the World Boardgaming Championships in 2007.[8] He co-founded and edited Flagship magazine in 1983, covering the field of play-by-mail games. A keen card player, he has represented the House of Commons at bridge.[9]

so he's not actually receiving any cash just NI credits?

I would guess that he is receiving 'contribution based' Job Seekers Allowance which lasts for ? 6months?
ie: he has paid enough NI contributions to entitle him to JSA
As you add will also get NI credits while he is on JSA
He will not be entitled to an income assessed benefit

I find it VERY hard to believe that, even in the current situation, a man who has a PhD in maths, and speaks 6 languages, can't find employment without needing the help of the jobcentre. Especially as he is likely to have a great many contacts from his career so far. Any professional with these qualifications who was not a former MP would have been signed-on with exec recruitment agencies in the first week of losing his previous job. What has this guy been doing?

I would venture to suggest that this is basically a publicity stunt.

Yep, he will keep his NI contributions up to date, whilst he takes a few summer weeks "considering his options".
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
