Microsoft .NET Framework - Update Failed

For the first time ever I am having a problem with a Microsoft Update on Windows XP.
The last batch of updates installed fine with the exception of security update Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (KB979906)
Although I keep getting the message that the installation has failed it keeps pestering me to install it. I have tried downloading and installing it from the Microsoft website but to no avail and even re-booting doesn’t work.
I have been onto the Microsoft support website where they suggest a procedure for removing and re-installing Microsoft .NET Framework and although it looks complicated (to me anyway) I suppose I will have to muddle through it.
Before I do this, and probably !!!!-up my computer which is what usually happens when I don’t know what I am doing, do I really need Microsoft .NET Framework. From what I can gather from a Google search it seems to be something to do with programming or does it perform some other key function.
What happens if I remove it and, is it easy to re-install if I should need it again in the future?
At least if I remove it I will get rid of this irritating installation nag to install something I can’t install.

Hi
Some programs won't run without the .NET Framework.
Best bet is to un-install it by using the information from Microsoft support.
Then either re-install it straight away, or wait till you come across a program that needs it.

Thanks for speedy reply.
The main programmes I run are Microsoft Office 2003, Media Player, Firefox and viewing YouTube.
Do you know if these will run OK without Microsoft.NET Framework? If so I am inclined to take it off as long as it easy to re-install.0 -

All the above will run fine without Net Framework, in fact there isn't that many that use Net Framework, one that does comes to mind that requires it is Windows Fix-it but apart from that not many.
Also Net Framework can slow down older less powerfull PCs/laptops.0 -
.Net Framework updates are a PITA, I'd just uninstall everything related to it as it doesn't affect anything that you are likely to use in a home environment0

There's stuff all over the internet about "KB979906 install fails", with various 'solutions'
The one I tried - run a Microsoft Fix-It program, then the update again - didn't work, and rather than uninstalling and reinstalling all the variants of .NET, or just .NET 1.1, I have simply hidden the KB979906 update until they've found a straightforward solution.0 -

I was with dogmaryxx's post all the way (and have seen it before) until it said to remove .NET 2.0 with SP1, and reinstall them, for surely KB979906 is an update to .NET v1.1?
Puzzled...0
