Have you no family that could do it for you?

It really is easy with a PC. Get a USB turntable, plug into to your PC/Laptop, burn your vinyl to you PC and the burn your MP3's to CD.

Many thanks to all of you for your replies, but most of it is still above my head TBH, I was sort of after someone who could it for me.
TBH, given that the process would be relatively time consuming (you'd have to play each LP in full), I'd hazard a guess that it might work out cheaper to just go out and buy the CD versions (assuming they're available), and of course you'd end up with better quality.

The problem is that if done properly it is a very time-consuming (and boring) process. For every vinyl album there is probably an hour's worth of work once you've done the trimming of the resulting files, the splitting into tracks, album and track naming and, if necessary some de-clicking and noise removal if the record has any damage.

There aren't really any shortcuts, so it's bound to be expensive unless you DIY.

Unless the material is rare, it's far easier to use other methods (which we couldn't condone here) to get it already in digital form.

Again, I suggest the Alesis wins. Once the album is on the hard disk, I could top/tail, track split a standard 8/10/12 track album in 5 mins or less. Add on 5 mins or so for burning time, and job done in 10 mins.

What's 'boring' about sitting listening to an album you like?

The OP doesn't want mp3 files. He/she wants the vinyl transferred to CD without, you'll note, using a PC.

I'm sure it'd do a great job, but fairly expensive at around £700.

Available elsewhere for £500 or so.

In a world where folks will happily drop thousands on a honking big plasma screen, £25-30 a month on a Sky subscription, the attendant installation costs, just to watch some Sports, and to see 24 a few months before it comes out on DVD..........

Why do people grudge spending a fraction of this on decent music reproduction?

That,s a good point. Although I might be going off thread how do you copy a vinyl to CD in original full-fat format (if that's the correct term)?

Ultimately it'll come down to how much material they want to transfer, and whether it's already also available on CD.

Exactly the way I described above.

You can store it in standard CD format, which is 44.1kHz sampling rate, 16-bit words, or at higher resolutions (better than CD), up to 96kHz, 24-bit.

Storing the higher-resolution files on disc uses up more discs than 'regular' CDs as the files are larger, but that's the trade-off for better quality.

    OR

You can use a PC program like Audacity and a good soundcard to store the vinyl as 44.1 16-bit WAV or FLAC files, then burn them to CD with a suitable program.

Only because s/he thought it would be too hard a process, but as you can see I linked a page that tells them how to do, quite easily.

Once they burn them to CD, they will no longer be MP3, will they?
