Morning guys,
We've been invited over to a relatives in Limoges for a week at the end of july/beginning of august for a family do. Does anyone know the best & cheapest way of getting there as flying is not an option that come to over £600 for 2 adults & 2 children. So as far as i know the options are ferry/tunnel and then drive which is fine but which crossings are best etc?
Any sugestions would be very welcome
Thanks

if you have tesco vouchers book the tunnel
we're about to do the very same, driving down to folkstone, hotel overnight, then eurotunnel and drive down to near Limoges
just over 400 miles from eurotunnel, about £70 in fuel (in my thirsty beetle), a big saving on £600 plus no need to hire a car whilst there0 -

Hi,
Well the cheapest way is to get the ferry from somewhere like Dover to Calais .... but it is a long drive down - maybe look at LD Lines Newhaven to Dieppe or Portsmouth to Le Havre ... depends where you are ... look at someone like http://www.ferry-to-france.co.uk/ will list the different options available.
We often go Portsmouth to Caen & drive down to Tours (my parents live there) takes 3 hours by car ... Limoge is about 130 miles further on - tolls road most of the way.
Other option is Stansted to Tours (Ryan Air), then hire car - they can be quite cheap ... but as you can get a return ferry from Dover to Calais for about £100 - suspect not worth it.

Dover to Calais or Eurotunnel (especially if using Clubcard rewards) will probably work out cheapest but longest drive. As you are going in peak holday period try and avoid travelling at weekends if you can
Driving on the autoroutes can be expensive but is easy driving with an 80mph speed limit in much of the routes. if you live in the South or Southe East certinly consider the drive option0 -
Just had a quick look at Ryanair(28/7 - 4/8) Stansted to Limoges just over £200 + CC charges for 2 adults & 2 children. Fine if Stansted is ok for you and you don't need a hire car.

If you decide to drive take into account the 1st/2nd week in August will be manic on the roads  If I'm not mistaken it's when the french take their hols.0 -
Thanks guys,
Have now seen some cheap (ish) flights from bristol to limoges but still trying to figure out about taking our car over there or we will be kind of stuck for a week. Will keep an eye on things i guess and try & make a decision.x0 -
Maybe also worth looking on http://www.raileurope.co.uk to see options by train.0

We have done UK to Dordogne/Aredeche and take the Dover to Dunkirk ferry (Norfolk line, around £50 return). We do and cheap overnight stay (Etap £40 for upto 4 people). The drive in France is the easy bit, we've never had a problem and any tolls are cheap. The day to avoid is Assumption day when the world and his wife are on the road.0
