Thanks. I'm using Windows XP Home and XP pro. I'll have a look and post any further questions at a later stage. It depends on how many World Cup games I watch as to when, but thanks again. I'll be back

When I say WinXP I always mean WinXP Pro. WinXP Home is crippled in many ways. I think it uses Fat32 by default which makes all files accessible by everyone. Correct me if I'm wrong. Microsoft calls it "simplified security"

so does that mean that the use of a limited user account for security is pointless with XP home?

A bit of copying and pasting:
    1. Open Control Panel
    2. Open Administrative Tools (XP Professional users need to open Performance and Maintenance and then Administrative Tools).
    3. Open the Computer Management.
    4. In Computer Management under Storage click Disk Management, which will display all drives and each of their file systems and other important information about the drives.
What does it say for the C drive?

Far from it. A limited user account is a sound move, regardless of OS.

In Linux and Unix systems, the basic division between admin and user accounts has been in place for at least 30 years. In the early days, Windows discarded that as 'unnecessary sophistication'. But once the internet came into general use, the sense in doing it that way was far more obvious.

Unfortunately, Microsoft themselves and lots of software manufacturers did not fully subscribe to the idea, so sometimes things you would expect to do under a Limited User Account had to be done as Administrator. [This may be why some posters above are prefer using Admin accounts to using LUA's]. But probably since XP, these problems have been ironed out.
