my 18 year old BMW has a mpg meter. This swings madly into the 50mpg+ zone as soon as take my foot off the accelerator (don't need to press clutch/take out of gear).0

uses less fuel if you have a old engine or a new kia/hyundai0

Sounds very dangerous and illegal to me. If you can't afford to run a car maybe you shouldnt have one and save us all from the dangers of people coasting.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I don't know whether this is true as I don't know too much about the workings of the modern motor vehicle!!
Btw, I'm taking my IAM test this friday (:D) and if I dare coast at any time other than just before coming to a halt, I'll failMy observer rightly says that it leads to a loss of control - what if you need to accelerate out of a hazard whilst coasting? You have to depress clutch, engage gear, release clutch then accelerate. By then it's probably too late.
I did actually try coasting (shhhh, don't tell anyone :silenced::D) but as the car careered down the hill I realised I'd probably be using more fuel due to applying the brakes as opposed to the engine braking effect. It's a nono in crabman's books0 -
Most fuel injected engines cut the fuel off completely when on the overrun (in gear and no throttle).my 18 year old BMW has a mpg meterHappy chappy0

Clearly my new yaris with vvti will be equipped with the works, but as for the current almera, which doesn't have a computer but is a 1.4i, is there any way to check, just for interest, whether it is one of these 'run for free' engines??0

1.4i is injected, so yes it will have fuel cut off.Happy chappy0
