my 18 year old BMW has a mpg meter. This swings madly into the 50mpg+ zone as soon as take my foot off the accelerator (don't need to press clutch/take out of gear).

Sounds very dangerous and illegal to me. If you can't afford to run a car maybe you shouldnt have one and save us all from the dangers of people coasting.

Aside from it being illegal (which it is) I was told once by a mechanic that it is dangerous for a new engine as it can allow unburnt fuel into the catalytic convertor which can cause it to fail.

I don't know whether this is true as I don't know too much about the workings of the modern motor vehicle!!
really?? What difference does it make if the engine is idling whether you're wheels are spinning or not??

Btw, I'm taking my IAM test this friday (:D) and if I dare coast at any time other than just before coming to a halt, I'll fail ;) My observer rightly says that it leads to a loss of control - what if you need to accelerate out of a hazard whilst coasting? You have to depress clutch, engage gear, release clutch then accelerate. By then it's probably too late.

I did actually try coasting (shhhh, don't tell anyone :silenced::D) but as the car careered down the hill I realised I'd probably be using more fuel due to applying the brakes as opposed to the engine braking effect. It's a nono in crabman's books ;)

Most fuel injected engines cut the fuel off completely when on the overrun (in gear and no throttle).

Same with my 15 year old 3 series (awesome car).

Clearly my new yaris with vvti will be equipped with the works, but as for the current almera, which doesn't have a computer but is a 1.4i, is there any way to check, just for interest, whether it is one of these 'run for free' engines?? :o

1.4i is injected, so yes it will have fuel cut off.
