Question about going to a graduation ceremony

My brothers graduation ceremony is next month, my mum & dad are going with him but he's said others can go and watch it on a big screen somewhere? Anyway, as none of us have ever known anybody finish uni, we don't know what the correct etiquette is, we've been told formal wear, is this like suits and ties (or bow ties?)…

Just a quick mention; if you or your family are going to be in the pictures and any of you are inclined to a shiny face, bring some powder! There were so many pictures from my BA graduation where we all looked really shiny.....not that helpful but worth mentioning I thought!
