Book Club Scam

I returned off holidays at the begining of July to find a card among my mail saying that a delivery company had left a parcel for me in my front garden ninteen days earlier.( My front garden is six foot by eighteen foot and fully paved with a two foot high wall seperating it from the pavement).

There was no parcel. I rang a contact number that was on the card several times over next few days and got a continuous tone to indicate no such number.

Afew weeks later I got a letter from "The Mystery and Thriller club" of Swindon asking for 99 pence to activate my membership of their book club. I binned it.

I had another demand this time for £9.99 as I had not responded quick enough. I wrote on the back of the demand that I was not interested and returned it.

A week ago I had another letter saying that payment was overdue and to act now or it would referred to a debt collection agency and further legal action would be taken.

I returned a copy of thier letter saying that I had not asked or indecated that I wanted Join any book club and that I had never had any books off them and that if this harassment cotinued I would be seeking legal advice.

What I would like to know is

1. Can they refer a non existant debt to a debt collection agency?.

2. Is this inertia selling which I thought was ilegal?.

3. Could this affect my credit standing?.

4. What other steps can I take as they seem to ignore anything I say in my corresponndence ?.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Hey Hey :D

I've had the same problem - here's the thread (Is this a scam??)- I emailed them with the following message and will post back here if I hear back from them.

I have visited their website, set up a username and password and sent the following message to them and am copying it to Trading Standards now...
    Dear Sir/Madam

I have received a threatening letter from yourselves requesting payment for £2.99 within the next ten days, otherwise you will apply a full charge of £17.99 on my "account".

Allow me to state the facts here:
    • I never signed up to your company
    • I never asked for any books
    • I have not received any books
    • I have no intention of paying for something I have not received
I am copying this communication to Worcestershire Trading Standards for their attention and advice, together with an article in The Guardian
about your scam tactics to extract money from individuals.

If I should have to deal with your shoddy company any further, I will invoice you £40 per hour of my time, or part thereof.

Thanking you in advance I await hearing from you,

The Powerful Mighty Crabster :D (didn't actually put this in the letter ;))

I typed this quickly as I have other stuff to do though if it comes to invoicing I may take my time :rotfl: hopefully this will get rid of them, I'll post back with their/Trading Standards response.

Thanks for your support peeps  :T

Success - received just now from them:
    Dear [],
    Thank you for your e-mail.

We are sorry to learn that you have been the unfortunate victim of a hoax. A coupon bearing your address was sent to us, but obviously without your permission. Arrangements have been made to remove the account from our records. In the meantime please ignore any invoice and accompanying letter that may already be on its way to you.

We trust this clarifies the matter for you.

    Regards,
    Customer Services
