Cancelling Direct Debits?

Hi,

I currently have a direct debit to Addaction (a charity) which I no longer wish to donate to. Can I just cancel the direct debit or do I have to contact the charity to cancel the arrangement?

Likewise I have a direct debit for 3G Phone insurance but I no longer require the cover. Can I just cancel the direct debit or do I have to contact the phone insurance company to cancel the arrangement?

Thanks
I enjoy a pint of beer each night for it's health benefits. The other pints are for my witty comebacks and flawless dance moves.

In bost of the case i would inform them that you going to cancel the direct debit and then do so with the bank.
  • I thought people would suggest that. I was hoping I could get away with just cancelling the direct debit without going through the hassle of contacting the companies ... ?

  • The charity, you don't need to cancel as its a donation. The insurance company you have a agreement with so you will need to contact them or you may have charges from them for not paying when they have covered you with insurance.

If you just cancel the direct debits with the bank can upset them as they try to take the money and can't or i think they could also restup the direct debit but I'm not sure on that.

For being kind i would inform them even though you don't have to it's a more friendly way.

You can, in the cases you describe (unless the Insurance has any sort of minimum notice / tie in period?), ........ but it's a nicety / courtesy to advise someone you're no longer contributing?

You could just cancel with your bank and the chances are you'll have no problems but to remove the very small potential for a slip up the DD scheme clearly states -

'You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us'

Please notify us meaning the company you have authorised to collect the funds as if you don't notify they can still rightfully request the funds from the bank. In theory the bank shouldn't permit the collection once you've cancelled with them, but.............

What if you just cancel the direct debit using online banking - is this even possible as haven't checked? I seriously need to cut my spending. I've got 23 direct debits, 18 of which are for charities, I haven't got time to call them up and inform them really.

Any time I've wanted to stop donating to a charity I've just cancelled the DD and after the next month they usually send a letter saying "oh we're sorry, please let us know if you'd like to start donating again".

Provided you are not contractually bound to donate, you can just cancel the direct debit.

You will have to contact the company to cancel the insurance policy. If you just cancel the direct debit, the insurance policy will still be active and you will still owe the money.
