    From OP recount of the conversation, it sounds as if they understood each just fine.

    OP I think your anger is misdirected - surely its the tax credit people who messed up and caused the problem (assuming you provided them with your correct details)?

    As bryanb said, banks are often slated because they off-set - damned if they do, damned if they don't. What if the money in your savings account was earmarked for something else, something more urgent where the consequences of non-payment were far more severe and you discovered the bank had taken it to cover the direct debit? Are you honestly saying that you wouldn't complain?
