Urgent Advice Leather or Fabric Sofa if you have a cat

Hi guys,

Just wondered if you could give me some advice. I have ordered 2 fabric sofas from M&S and am thinking of either

cancelling one of them and getting one leather sofa
cancel both get 2 leather sofas
stick with original order

The reason I have stuck with fabric is that I have an old cat 16+ and he has ruined the arms of my current sofa (fabric) by either clawing it or using it to support himself as he jumps up onto sofa.

With new fabric ones I was going to get armcaps to protect this area.

Do you think a dark brown leather sofa and a country chenille mocha (light brown) would look good together or is it best to have both sofas the same.

Thanks for any advise. I've seen a leather one I like at a good price so need to make a decision, which I am not very good at LOL.

D

Stick with the fabric but use antimacassars as you've considered but with extra padding underneath.

Also as your cat is getting on would some sort of "step" help so it doesn't have to pull itself up. (The things we do for our little darlings!)

Forgot to add fabric would be easier to mend if needed - pulled threads can always be pulled back through and more serious damage can be discretely "darned" but scratches in leather are a much bigger problem.

We bought a couple of lovely leather sofa's and then got our cat. Our lovely sofa's are now scratched beyond redemption! Luckily I love our cat but the next time we go furniture shopping fabric sofa's will be top of the list.

we have chenille M&S sofas bought in feb and then got 2 cats about a month ago. Although they don't scratch that much on the furnitre I have looked closely after they do, and there is no discernable damage to the fabric so far. Obviously we are discouraging them from the habit! but the sofas seem really well made and sturdy so fingers crossed that they will be easy to protect.

What about hair though... it is probably easier to get off leather! We have to use a lint roller to get the hair off ours but it does come off, now we are getting to learn their habits, some strategically placed blankets are coming in handy... don't you just love the little darlings :-) My DH wonders if we can just cut out the middle man and use the sticky lint roller on the cats...

Funnily enough, I worred about leather sofas as we have three cats, but they don't seem to like the feel of the leather under paw so it's been OK.

My parents single leather chair has stood up to our cat expect when she knocked the Christmas tree over on it. But she usually uses to bottom stairs or the rug as her scratching spots, but she quite a good cat for not scratching furniture.

Our old cats eventuality wore though the arms of our old sofa but we did have it 10years +

Our cats trashed our fabric suite, but have been fine with the leather one. Had it for about 3 years, and we have scratched it more than the cats.
  • Your cat might prefer the fabric sofa to scratch as it's feels "scratchable" for a cat's paws. That's not to say that your cat won't give the leather sofa a go as well, that's just cats for you! Leather scratches are a lot more difficult to hide as they really do show up on the material. Could you cover the sofas with a thick throw and cushions?

my cat trashed the arms and side of our fabric sofas but in 3 years has not made a mark on our leather ones -prefers to rip up the stair carpet now.
He rarely even sits on the leather ones whereas he was always curled up on the material ones.

One of my daughter's leather sofa's was scratched by her cat before the delivery men brought the other sofa in the house.
I had cats and found that it does'nt matter what kind of sofa you get,if your cat likes to scratch it will, only difference is you can disguise fabric damage easier.
Mind you ,you can get some very good leather repair kits but that is'nt realy any consolation when you've spent a fortune on a sofa.
