Does anyone have any tips for getting tall domes to cut off to make the wings?
Usually I make two batches of fairy cakes and cut the tops off the ones that rise well, but that's a bit wasteful and they look a bit clumsy.

I just use a sharp vegetable knife to score a circle in the middle of each cake and then use the knife to prise the circle off the cake, taking some sponge from underneath with it. I then overfill the hole with butter icing, cut the circle into two and arrange as wings in the icing. No matter how flat my cakes have turned out this always seems to work. I then put a spoonful of icing sugar into a sieve and then use this to sprinkle some icing over the top of this.
Also, if your cakes are at all overdone or too flat this is a good way of disguising the fact and making them look good.0 -
I don't know how to get them taller, short of putting a little more mixture into the cake cases.
I cut a circle with a sharp pointed knife, sort of slightly downwards into the cake, if you can get what I mean..... I then fill the hole left with some butter icing and cut the circle into two halves to make the wings.

get a small sharp knife and cut a small hole in fairy cake. cut bit in two. put butter icing in hole and put 2 halves on their edges to make wings. sprinkle over with icing sugar using sieve.0

Overfill the cake cases and they will be fuller.
I use a vegetable peeler to cut the middle bit out. Easier and less dangerous than a knife. Just score it around by digging the end in and use a sawing action, and lift the middle out. Easy peasy:hello:0 -
Alternatively take a spoonfull of mix and drip onto greaseproof paper spread out a little and put this in the oven with the cakes, you do have to take it out after only a few minutes but much bigger and elegant wings for the fairy cakes, you will still need to slice the fairy cakes tops off a little to get an even surface though but you get to eat them as you don't need them for wings. Alternatively slice them in half and put a little buttercream inside and tell the kids they are oysters.
If you really want to go nuts with little effort, just make up some sugar syrup and drizzle it into the shape of wings the kids will go nuts.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -

Not really posh you have the mix there and you can mess around with the edges to get a better effect with such little effort, it's worth it to see the looks on the kids faces and the wings taste much nicer by the way.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0
