Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Passwords and Encryption Keys

In the "Password" tab expand "Passwords: login" and delete the password for your wireless network. Now type in the password again when prompted. Make sure you connect to the right network and not your neighbors virgin box. Also enable "show password" when typing it in to make sure it's the right one.

Just tried that, but unfortunately that did not work, the same long unknown password came back again.
    Any other suggestions anyone?

Have you rebooted (restarted) the computer and router?

Do other wireless devices connect ok?

Yes rebooted and still not working, and yes my Toshiba with windows on works fine, it really is this Ubuntu I regret ever getting it :(

First at all, are you using WEP or WPA? If WEP then it might be an ASCII <-> HEX problem. If WPA, try the following

Right click on the wireless symbol -> Edit Connections -> Wireless Tab

delete all stored wireless networks and reconnect

If it still doesn't work there might be a problem with your keyring and you need to reset it.

You will lose all your saved passwords by doing this!

Its not a long unknown password. It's what your key actually ends up as.
