What's the maximum tax credits and child credits claimable?

Posted on behalf of a friend.

She is a single mum of one (7 months old) and works part time with a long term employer who is very flexible with her hours and salary.

She tried claiming tax credits and the claim worked great until he got a strange phone call from a woman at the Tax credits office talking complete jibberish, this was followed by a revised tax credits/child credits award which was reduced to less than 10% of the original award. She has tried in vain to get the tax credits to put it back according to the application form but she has had over 10-11 brown envelopes full of complete nonsence.

She now wants to do a change of circumstances.

Does anyone know:

a) What income and how many hours are needed to work each week to get the maximum award for tax credits and child tax credits, and

b) what would the weekly award be?

c) What other in-work benefits are available?

Comments

  • If her employer is so flexible with hours and salary, why not take more hours and a higher salary instead of trying to claim more benefits? This seriously sounds like someone trying to milk the system for all they can.

Hi, Why not have a look at the following website, it gives all of the 'allowances' and allows you to play around with hours and salary figures.

No I don't think this person is 'milking' the system - she is plain and simply USING the system which was designed to help out. To be honest why would anybody go to work for more hours and extra cost if after taking all of the costs of working into account you would be no better off working 17 hrs than say 30hrs. The good thing about the internet is that it has made people aware of their choices or would you still subscribe to the fact that 'ignorance' is a good thing!!!

I don't think it's tax credits talking complete jibberish.

A change of circumstances in what? To get WTC you need to work 16hrs per week or more. To get an additional amount of WTC, you need to work 30hrs+.

The rest depends on the hourly rate and other income. If the tax credits have been amended to 10% of the original award, there is obviously a very good reason. Were they getting overpaid and are now repaying the overpayments?

Your question is impossible to answer with the details you have provided.

The question is: What income and how many hours are needed to work each week to get the maximum award for tax credits and child tax credits

We dont need to know income and hours because she wants to change them to suit.

So far post #4 is the best lead.

i might be wrong, but i think it is needed to know the income and hours as surely the rate/amount of each will affect the amount received? there is a threshold, and once you earn over that amount, your tax credits are adjusted accordingly

Im unsure exactly what the formula is. It depends on different things.

If she goes to a jobcentre, or even a surestart centre as they get Jobcentre advisors going in also, she would be able to get a better off calculation done which would show her different amounts she could/couldnt get.

or you could try entitled to or the online benefits advisor thing on direct.gov?
