JSA after redundancy - few "newbie" questions.

You are allowed to do as much unpaid voluntary work as you like whilst on JSA, as long as:
1. you are still actively seeking paid employment
2. you declare to them that you are doing voluntary work
3. the voluntary work is not for friends or family.
The website do-it.org.uk lists many volunteer opportunities.Newlywed at the point I joined the forum... now newly separated0 -

That 'choice' may not be yours to take. You are expected to actively seek employment and although there is some leeway as to what/where and how much it pays in the early days, the longer you sign for the tighter the margins become. You will also be sent on compulsory training courses etc.
Appreciate that you have worked and paid taxes etc, for some time but that does not give you the right to kick back and chill out on JSA for as long as you fancy. I also think that things are going to get a bit tougher under the new Government.
We would all like to do that - but you should not expect the tax payer to support you while you carry out your little projects. Getting back into work should be your top project.
I fully appreciate your point of view on my post. The taxpayer isn’t there to support those who choose not to work when they are capable of doing a job. There is a job out there for everyone out there, it is a case of that individual choosing to do that job.
However, I have worked since I left school and intend to work again. I have forged a career through work development and intend to continue that development. You only get one life on this planet and there is not point in sitting in a job 9-5 that you do not enjoy. With my time off which has been enforced upon me, I intend to keep active and this time may be best spent doing voluntary work. I have also always harboured the hope of becoming self employed and would like to investigate taking that further.
I understand that I am just someone typing on the internet, just someone asking some advice on the internet who could really have other intentions. But felt I wanted to justify myself a little bit.Wee_Willy_Harris wrote: »And I have answered that point. But (as of now) 131 other people have viewed this thread. Maybe one of them is holidaying in the UK?
I do feel there is a lack of the most basic of information somewhere. The stupid little questions such as you can’t go abroad but you can holiday in UK, the fact that your sign on date is specified by your NI number etc and often it is those tiny little questions that make the difference and help you understand the processes better.0 -
I have signed off , having had 6 months of cont based JSA then no money at all just NI contributions. I was made redundant last year.
At 3 months no one asked me to sign every week for six weeks, so they dont do in all cases, no one read my job search sheet for about 2 months either (I continued to fill it in)
I would personally wait to start signing on after your holiday if you can wait till then, although I believe you can sign off for the time you are away and then rapid sign back on again but miss a weeks money.0
