Please post the complete error details.

What is your operating system and Internet Explorer version?
  • Download Mozilla Firefox :) Much better than IE

The error is occuring in a html page within NIS, not on an internet page so that won't fix the problem. Some Norton screens rely on IE.

All the above plus, after "page" and before "Lastly"..
    Line 335
    Char 5
Error "IE5ResourceDoc.documentElement" is null or not an object.
    Code 0
    URL res://nisplres.dll/10036

    IE6 I think. Windows XP Home SP2.

Would the fact that System Restore is not working have any relevance?

Downloaded Firefox yesterday - after problem showed up.

    Thanks for Norton link.
  • Chippy, it would appear it is directly related to IE thus I do believe firefox would indeed fix the problem.

"Error "IE5ResourceDoc.documentElement" is null or not an object."

And even if it doesnt fix the problem, firefox is still better anyway :p

Yes, it is related to IE and that is precisely why Firefox won't fix the problem. It's because NIS uses the IE components embedded in Windows.

Oldagetraveller, see same error at http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060518.gtss3may18/BNStory/Technology/Troubleshooter, which suggests it is to do with Java VM.

First make sure you aren't using Microsoft's Java VM (because it has been superseded by Sun's JVM) --> http://www.java.com/en/download/help/uninstall_msvm.xml

Then download the latest Sun JVM --> http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

    And reboot your computer.
  • Thanks for those links Chippy. There was no definite answer about the error message in the first link but it may just be worth uninstalling Microsoft VM (it is on my machine) and downloading Sun JVM as you suggest. Just got to work up the courage to start deleting stuff from my registry etc! I'm always a bit reluctant to go too far and end up with a pile of poo!
I also contacted Symantec and received a quick reply but the error they list is not exactly the same and linked to a Windows security patch and/or possibly Jscript.dll file.
Re the System Restore they suggest turning off Symantec Resource Protection prior to any restore then turn back on afterwards. That did work but why there has never been similar problem before I don't know.
    Thanks to all who responded.
