British Gas now sell old debt to 3rd parties who then own it and chase the debtor. You saying 'I didn't live here on dd/mm/yy' does not cut the ice, they need proof like tenancy agreements.

I'd got with specialsparky's suggestion and send BG your landlord's (or letting agent's) details with a copy of your tenancy agreement (you don't have to copy the whole thing, the bit with the dates, addresses and rent should do) and ask them to ensure LS co. stop contacting you

I got a very similar letter today from Litigation Services Co, and its in regards to a meter reading. The letter is, as above, threatening to schedule a visit to obtain the required details.
The only way to contact them is through a 0844 number, could they not have a simple web page where I can answer their questions?!?

This is about a bill (I take it) for a previous tenant and has got nothing to do with us.

We have already spoken to BG about the fact that there was an outstanding bill before we bought the place and they have stopped asking us about it over the last 5-6 months, but now we get this again.

I have to say I find the tone of the letter a bit harsh and doesnt make me want to contact them about something that doesnt actually concern me, but a previous tenant.

5minutes into the call and no answer...

If it is purely in relation to a meter reading it could relate to the 2 year 'must read' which they will obtain a warrant to get if they need to. When was your meter last read by them (not you)?

It is up to BG and the DCA's to prove the debt, not for people to disprove that they owe.

I would not ring them on an 0844 about someone else's debt. They can go and hang. And as you have already been dealing with BG, I would not deal with a 3rd party either
