Very few people have a crystal ball.
Quite. And bear in mind that the people tipping shares in newspapers are not investors or fund managers, they are journalists.

Newspapers recommendations on both investment funds and shares tends to be reactive. i.e. its already gone up a ton, lets recommend it.

Money Mail recommended tech stocks after 90% of the growth had already been achieved. If you followed the recommendations from Money Mail you would now need over 900% growth just to get your money back.

Good point. Any suggestions as to "best" sources for recommendations on stocks and funds? I know a few web sites but thought you may know others. Not necessarily "tips" but analysis / charting / commentary for investors to make decisions. Wondered if there were any publically available links to information sites that you use?

  • Here's how some of the papers did in 2005 - IA link

    Telegraph +10.3%
    Times + 29.8%
    Sunday Times +41%
    Mail on Sunday +20.8%

    FTSE All Share +18%

Is dunstonh referring to the Mail or to Financial Mail on Sunday in his above criticism? (I seem to remember this is a repeat question ;).) Since the criticism is so damning, I do think we & the journalists concerned are owed the facts.

What some of the papers recommended for 2006

I haven't yet assessed their performance.

I cannot recall which it was. It was 5 years ago now. I remember the article being a double page spread and did kick up a bit of a stink back then for being totally unbalanced as it compared corporate bonds to tech stocks in a peformance league table but didnt highlight the risk differences.

It was referred to again in an investment seminar earlier in the year which was discussing the perils "fashion investing" and showed various charts about where the papers had reported stocks and funds as a "buy" and then what happened next 5 years. The point was that many of the stock tips were made after 2/3rds of the growth had already been seen. The xxx mail one was highlighted as the worst case of it.

I find this one quite useful.

Also, if you are a client of Hargreaves Lansdown, you can register for online access - which apart from real time value of your portfolio, offeres, news, analysis, charts and links to newspaper tips - er - recommendations! I think the same sort of info is available fromr many other stockbrokers.
