Can you slab over slabs?

I have nasty utility slabs in my back garden. Whole garden is being redesigned and stripped back to start again. Rather than have to lift all the existing slabs, can they be slabbed over with nice ones?

The garden level is too low anyway, it needs built up a little so the extra height would help rather than hinder.

One issue might be that they were only laid on sand, not on a cement base, so I'm not sure if that would have an effect.

no reason why not. you dont really need a textbook base for a foot traffic patio.
my front garden is slabbed direct onto the soil. its never moved an inch.

You've succombed to the garden makeover then lol!

I wouldn't lay slabs ontop of other slabs as else your compromising with the previous levels unless you lay another layer of sand on top. Any unevenness will be mirrored in your new slabs. Remove and give away or break up into more easily handled pieces with Mr S. Hammer. Laid on sharp sand is fine...far easier to deal with in future if slabs settle as you can easily relay..plus alot cheaper.

Patio that i'll be replacing is made up of 24 2foot square slabs (i can barely move let alone lift!) that all need to go too. Considered repaving but likely to go for decking instead as it will be that much easier to handle.

i was assuming the OP would use sharp sand or cement/mortar between the two layers.

I'd whack them on top with a layer of sand underneath to bed them in/level them.

Yes, the intention was to have a cement base on top of the old ones so a new less 'slopey' level could be got.

    It's been coming a while now. :)

Considered decking too but don't want the upkeep tbh. Spoken to several people who loved their decks for the first year, after that they got fed up of having to powerwash slime off or retreat the wood etc. I want to potter in my garden and plant things. I don't want to have to do much in the way of maintenance. :D
