One onion or many?

Firstly apologies if this is already covered in another thread - I had a look at the onion links but couldn't see anything obvious.

I planted some onions (the small bulbs, not seeds) 2-3 months ago and they look like they are doing ok. What I was wondering is, does one bulb produce one onion, or will it produce lots like a potato does?

Sorry if this is a stupid question!!

But don't the shallots produce about 20 from one bulb...? That's what I've been told and so that's what I've been presuming is growing under the soil :o

But yes, the regular and giant onions, are just singles as far as I know...

I wondered that as well, i planted some red onions and i think it was 'snowball' white ones that are looking good, i was dying to know what was under the ground.
At the same time i planted garlic, just looking at them they look very like the onions, will they produce a load of garlic bulbs.
And when should i dig them up, they're looking quite big now.
