No sound any ideas?

My friends PC suddenly has no sound. This has defeated so far his PC builder/mender so I thought to try on here.
He has tried the speakers on other equipment and they work and the sound card has been replaced. The PC recognises the hardware etc. but still no sound.

Anything occur to anyone?

    have you checked your mixer settings aren't muted or turned down? Double click on the speaker icon.

    Does start, run, dxdiag produce any noise?

    I assume speakers are plugged into the correct hole?

    Does the PC have on-board sound as well as a card?

    Ok so we KNOW its not hardware problem if youve changed sound cards and installed update drivers...

    So it has to be software related. As albertross says make sure its not muted (trivial point but quite important as sometimes it auto mutes)

    Did you install any other software to control sound levels etc on the pc?/ if so uninstall all of these...

    What EXACTLY changed when the sound went? New software installation? Virus? Other hardware change?
