how many hinges on a door?

might seem like a pointless question, but I've noticed that hinges are usually sold in 3's. I'm replacing white moulded doors (2 hinges) with oak veneered (hardwood core) with glass panels. These are heavier than the old ones, so should I use 3 hinges?
I'm also considering using self closing hinges (spring type) and these come in 3's too. Could I get away with using 2 that are fire door rated. Not sure, but do the fire door kind take a heavier door?

You can use 2 but you have to go with the heavier ones due to the additional weight of the door.0

For the oak veneered doors you do really need 3 hinges.
We have similar doors and downstairs I used 3" hinges and it definitely needed 3. However I am currently fitting some more and bought the wrong sized hinges. These new ones are 4" and I could get away with just 2 per door if I wanted.
FYI doorhandlesuk.com are good for hinges and handles.

inner doors usually have two hinges and exterior doors have three hinges.
interior panel doors are much lighter than HW exterior ones.
the weight of the door is a clue in what to use.Get some gorm.0 -

That isn't necessarily the case.
Internal glazed / solid wood doors normally have 3 75mm hinges. Hollow doors normally have 2, although you will find in new build that they use 3 on all internal doors (even hollow ones).
4" hinges (100mm) are too large for a standard internal door (35mm deep) as are fire rated hinges.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
All doors have two hinges.
Doors to rooms which vary in humidity either side of the door have an extra hinge at mid point to prevent the door twisting
Other doors may have a middle hinge for security or to relieve the strain on the frame for frequently used doors0 -

I've got pretty heavy solid wood original 1920s doors which are wider than average and they are happy and secure on two 4" hinges - but having said that, it seems to me that not all hinges are equal. I have seen the hollow-style doors hanging on hinges made of pretty thin, light metal. Personally I'd be sticking with two hinges, but making sure they are a good, strong hinge.0
