When you sow them in the pot, cover it with some cling film. This aids germination. As soon as you see the first shoots, whip it off.

Do you mean cut them back to make them grow a thicker stem?

I mean whip the cling film off. You're meant to thin the plants out individually but i just plant a clump and they do fine......easy peasy

I'd say it's because they are still baby plants. Mine are like that too, and I am assuming that they will thicken up as they mature. What I don't know is how long that takes.
  • And don't forget to put the flowers in your salad aswell they are lovely, really sweet.

Mine are just the same. They've been at more or less the same stage for a while now. I was getting a bit worried, but after reading this thread I'll just give them more time and see what happens. And possibly buy a plant in the mean time!

I planted chives beside my carrots as apparently they help to deter carrot fly, and NONE have germinated. Probably just go and buy a plant now :(

You sowed chives you mean, you plant a plant and sow seeds.
Chives are quite slow starting as some of you are finding out. Really, if I sow a pot of chives I wouldn't expect to be cutting them for use until the next year. I could, but I wouldn't, letting them build up their energy.

Buying a chive plant, is one of those plants that either I don't mind buying, or I don't mind telling people to go and buy.
