debit card transaction - what sort of protection do you have

A friend of mine paid a company by debit card on Monday and the amount is showing on his bank account as leaving his account on Tuesday. The company concerned has called him and said that the payment didnt go through and they need to him to do a direct transfer from his bank account to theirs.
Its an amount of over £900 and he is rightly concerned that they wil get paid twice.
I've advised him to send the company a copy of his bank statement showing this transaction to prove that the payment has gone.
I'm just wondering what protection you have with debit card transactions? I've asked him to check that they havent just reversed the transaction, in which case, I've told him to ask for the printoff or a copy of it.

he should contact his bank to determine whether the authorisation is still valid or cancelled, until such a time, do nothing.0

If the payment was not fully taken it might show in Available Balance as a pending transaction.
However, if it is off his Balance and showing on Statement then it has definately been taken.
If they reversed the transaction it would show in a week or so.
I would print off the transaction and send them a copy and definately not send them the extra money.0 -
Agreed, definitely do not send them any more money until transactions are shown as reversed.Debts at LBM (May '08) £5760 - Lloyds CC £4260, Lloyds OD £1500;Debts as of May 28th 2011:Santander CC: £0.00Lloyds OD : £0.00DFW Nerd #1247 - Proudly dealt with my Debts
