Incensed with Nationwide!

Options
My elderly mother received a letter from Nationwide yesterday which detailed transactions over the past few months that they deemed to be 'unusual' could she contact the Special Investigation Unit to clear-up their concerns!
My mother was sent into a spiral of panic, bank statements came out and the whole family had to rack their brains as to transactions made as far back as March all of which were accounted for.
This morning she rang Nationwide to inform them that all was okay with all the transactions and was sold Card Protection Insurance!!!! The woman wanted to sell her 3 years at first but my Mum (still shaken from yesterday) agreed to a year only!!! (to be cancelled asap!!)
I am incensed that Nationwide would stoop so low with this sort of selling!
It is only with hindsight we realised that if there really had been a problem with her account they would have rung not sent a letter!!
Grrrr!

What transactions had Nationwide deemed to be "unusual"?

Nationwide queried transactions made via the internet which were no more or less than were made over the Xmas period!
I appreciate they have to check what they deem to be 'unusual' transactions but these actions should be kept separate from selling their products!

Bit of a double edged sword in my opinion.

Good that they're clearly on top of "unusual transactions" in case anyone did ever start buying things using your account details.

Bad they they've obviously used it as an opportunity to pedal their insurance.

It seems common nowadays for banking and financial institutions to take every opportunity to sell you additional services, whether you call them to query transactions on your account or pop into a branch to pay in a cheque.

Nationwide are no different to any of the others really. You just have to resist their efforts to sell you something you don't really want.
