Protecting myself sending a phone.

Hi there.

Iv just sold a new phone on Ebay for more than £300.

I'm probably just being stupid but i want to do all I can to protect myself from any scams.

Iv taken note of the IMEI number.
I'm sending recorded delivery to his Paypal registered address.

Hes only got a low feedback score so was wondering if there's any other tips people can give me so that I dont get scammed.

You should send it Special Delivery as you're then covered for loss up to £500. Currently you're only covered for £41 i think.?

Unfortunately Special costs around £5 but for a £300 phone i would definitely fork out.

Email the buyer with the IMEI after dispatch. That way you have a record of the real one.

Sorry, i did mean special delivery. £5.50 I believe.

Oh ok, good idea.

He just seems a bit urgent to get it. I sold it this afternoon and he asked me to post this afternoon as its for a 'Gift' for Friday.

I get that all the time. Something's on BIN for a week and they need it yesterday.

If you can, take a photo of the serial number on the phone and attach that to the email as well. If he knows that you have evidence photos of the item, he will be less inclined to try and pull a fast-one.

When you log into paypal does it say in the box at the top of the payment 'OK to send? If not don't send it and come back and ask for more advice.

Also enter tracking number into paypal when it is sent and keep the special delivery slip for a minimum of 6 months.

Yeah, it has a green tick and it says 'Ok to Post The Item'


After reading this forum i keep all the postage slips in a folder. I dont want some of the horror stories happening to me. lol

Just Thought Id Add that please be careful when selling cars espically on ebay, as a friend of mine had several people trying to scam him when selling a very high priced car, he notefied ebay and they cancel his membership but somehow he tryed contacting my friend again, so please be careful and blank you number plates out too, to stop people copying ur plates.

Hi, thanks Deano, I'm thinking of listing my car on Ebay but I'm waitng for a free listing day for motors. I'm a bit dumb when it comes to photos - how do I blank out the number plate? Caz x
