I discovered on another board this article about what turning on the aircon does to your mpg. It's in German, but it's easy enough to follow !
mpg increases by %
Scary stuff if you've got a Zafira !

I refuse to sit in a metal container in southern Spain in August with no air conditioning. Even if you turn the air con off and open the windows, all you get in is hot air, it's like sitting in front of a fan heater.
When we bought out Seat Alhambra we did not class the air con as an 'optional' extra, no matter what it diud to the MPG!
Having said that, our vehicle is very economical anyway.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
It's about choice. Aircon puts an extra load on the engine and that costs fuel.Happy chappy0

Link re done, it now works !
Seven day weekend.......... I'm with you on the air con in a hot climate comment. What this road test shows is the massive difference increase in MPG between different vehicles.

Thanks for that, but its so miniscule is it worth worrying about I kinda feel the developement of 7 coal burning power stations in japan is more important.

"Result of AUTO picture talking document urine"? Google is as bad as me!
Hawk,
Saving upto 26% of your fuel bill is quite important to most people.
And to think your a techie *tut tut* Sit back and learn from the mistress
26% is massive, especially if you do a lot of distance driving, it will soon eat into your fuel bill.
And of course I will be locking up, and alarm onWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Whilst I think that everyone realised that using the air cons adds to your mpg, I was surprised by the 'Difference' in the increase.
Realistically, travelling a steady speed in the best car hardly makes a difference, whereas in the worst car your going to get absolutely caned. & lets be honest, in a people carrier with a large glass are (2 sun roofs ?) the aircons going to be nearly permenantly on.

p.s. I was going to do the babelfish link, but I thought that some people would be put off by the word urine.:rotfl:0 -
I had a petrol Audi A3 with no aircon, it had a sunroof that was a waste of time except at 20mph, the wind noise was horrendous. In a hot summer I had an awful time because if I opened the windows and/or sunroof it was noisy and I couldn't hear the phone or the radio. I now have a diesel Seat Altea with dual climate control my fuel bill has gone down by about a third so I am not too worried about using a bit more fuel to arrive at my business meetings feeling cool and fresh. It's all relative isn't it?0
