I am beginning to get the feeling that if I said "here you go, here is a job" you would say you are screwed...
You see just what you want to see.

Actually no, I'd take your hand off for so much as a job cleaning toilets. I really would.

The reason I said I was screwed, was that all of my fears have been confirmed.

Employers in this country really do care less about the skills and experience of potential staff than how much fun they'd be down the pub.

They really do sit there and think "well she know's her [me] stuff, but the other less qualified girl seemed like a good laugh, I'm sure she'll muddle through somehow".

I know you are pretty mad but that above statement is ridiculous and you know it. Employers choose on a mix of things, not just personality, not just the skill set etc

You really do need to understand what has been posted rather than put your own interpretation on it.

Who said anything about going down the pub?
  • Unfortunately Amber you are screwed. If i was you i would set up my own business if other people wont employ you. Several of my very good friends with 25 years of experience in IT sales etc are on the dole. It's not you fault Amber, there is just a gross shortage of jobs and its about to get worse.

I am not sure it is so daft, really!

On this thread alone, we've alread had posters state that they would employ a "worse" canditate purely on the basis of personality, the old stereotype about shy people not wanting to interact with people....

If there were no jobs why would anyone advertise them?
Agencies advertise non-existant jobs to get people onto their mailing list. Just an example.

That was me and you did not read it correctly, I said I would hire a slightly worse candidate if their personality and attitude were far more suited to the job which indicates that I said that being the best skilled or the best personality are not good enough on its own for some jobs

Has anyone said the will employ purely on the basis of personality?

    I have missed that.

    EDIT - so I hadn't missed it - no-one said that.

Here's an idea - stop employing people on the basis that you like them personally and don't find them threatening and employ them based on their skills and abilities.

    Roger that!!

If you know more than the supervisor/manager interviewing you, you might as well walk out of the door.
